Shape the future of IBM!

We invite you to shape the future of IBM, including product roadmaps, by submitting ideas that matter to you the most. Here's how it works:

Search existing ideas

Start by searching and reviewing ideas and requests to enhance a product or service. Take a look at ideas others have posted, and add a comment, vote, or subscribe to updates on them if they matter to you. If you can't find what you are looking for,

Post your ideas
  1. Post an idea.

  2. Get feedback from the IBM team and other customers to refine your idea.

  3. Follow the idea through the IBM Ideas process.

Need capability to automatically create derived state diagrams in derived capsule

We have several patterns in our models that use derived capsules and their state machines quite extensively. Consequently, it's a common activity to navigate through a state machine in a derived capsule in order to locate a diagram containing a sub-state where the behavior will be overridden. In order to navigate into a sub-state, the tool requires the user to create a new state diagram for each sub-state that is entered. This is a very time consuming activity for a state machine with multiple composite states existing in multiple paths from the Top level state. This interaction becomes quite tedious when the user is creating multiple derived capsules when the pattern is being implemented. Rose RT does not have this limitation, and as a result it is much quicker to navigate derived state diagrams.

It would be very helpful if the tool would provide a script or a menu item that would automatically create the diagrams for all composite states in the derived capsule.

As part of the review process, we strive to be transparent about our intentions with each enhancement suggestion. Since the creation time of this ideas the product has evolved and your input may have been incorporated into newer releases.

Should this be not the case, please feel free to recreate it in our new Idea workspace for DevOps Model and Code RealTime (Please find here a blog how to achieve that: https://community.ibm.com/community/user/wasdevops/blogs/osman-burucu/2024/01/04/how-to-add-new-idea-for-devops-model-architect-and)

The idea will be kept in IBM's ideas repository and may still be voted on. It might be reassessed or reopened for additional feedback in the future. We value your feedback and thank you for allowing us the privilege of partnering with you in developing our products.

Recently (RSARTE 10.0 2016.29) there was a related improvement. When double-clicking an inherited composite state, the dialog that appears now let's you choose if you want to redefine the state and create a local state machine diagram, or if you instead want to navigate to the parent state machine diagram. So it's no longer necessary to override states just in order to navigate around in the state machine.
However, my understanding from this RFE is that you actually want to redefine all composite states, and that you are looking for a more convenient way of doing this than having to double-click on several composite states. We will consider adding such a command for a future release.
