Combination of Liberty and Java Versions in Container Images on IBM Container Registry (ICR)

WebSphere Liberty follows the Continuous Single Stream Delivery (SSCD) lifecycle policy. Under this policy, for the most recent two releases whose version numbers end with ".3", ".6", ".9", and ".12", interim fixes (iFixes) for security vulnerabilities are automatically provided. So customers regularly plan Liberty updates as part of their vulnerability management strategy. In addition, customers understand that upgrading Liberty is relatively straightforward because Liberty's zero-migration architecture enables seamless movement to newer versions.
On the other hand, customers would like to maintain the same Java version whenever possible, not only for Liberty itself but also to minimize any potential impact on their business applications running on Liberty.

When creating container images, customer currently uses the WebSphere Liberty container images available from IBM Container Registry (ICR) and add their applications on top of those base images. One of the main reasons for using IBM-provided container images is the availability of features such as automatic iFix application and automatic feature detection and installation.

At present, within the WebSphere Liberty container images available on ICR, only the latest release number level of Java associated with a given Liberty version can be selected. While it is possible to use a specific Java version/release number level by creating a custom container image, doing so prevents customers from benefiting from the capabilities provided by the ICR images, such as automatic iFix application and automatic feature detection and installation. Consequently, customers must implement and maintain these functions themselves.

To encourage customers to continue adopting WebSphere Liberty and IBM Semeru, we propose enhancing the ICR container image offering so that customers can select Java versions and release number levels with greater granularity.
